Beating Man Coverage

To beat Man-to-Man coverage, your receivers need to get separation fast and make tough catches when the ball comes their way. This half-field receiver drill focuses on winning off of the line and running away defenders while your QB makes accurate throws into tight coverage.

Drill Description:

This drill simulates a game situation using half of the field to ensure that you have a one-to-one ratio of players to maximize the effectiveness of each rep. The objective for the offense if to win off of the line and get separation in the first three steps.

Alignment

  • Offense: Half-field base formation leaving off the left (orange) receiver.
    • Orange plays the purple or green position for this drill.
  • Defense: Heads up. 3-yards off of each receiver (blue, green, purple).

Assignments

  • Coach #1
    • Pre-snap: Signal the play to the Quarterback.
    • Post-Snap: Eyes on the blue and green receivers.
  • Coach #2
    • Pre-snap: Ensure defense is aligned properly.
    • Post-Snap: Eyes on the purple receiver. 3-second count out loud.
  • QB
    • Deliver the ball to an open receiver in 3 seconds or less.
  • Receivers
    • Make one move and get to your assigned route.
    • Beat the defenders alignment/leverage.
      • Inside leverage: Gives up the outside.
      • Outside leverage: Gives up the inside.
      • Heads up leverage: Make a move, get physical.
  • Defenders
    • Change up your alignment/leverage.
    • Mirror the receivers first step.
    • Be annoying but don’t interfere.
