Deuce: 3-2 Cover 2 Flag Football Defense

Play Description

Deuce is the base defense in the Umbrella defensive playbook. This 3-2 Cover 2 defense is a balanced option that defends against big plays. This is the “bend but don’t break” defense of 5v5 flag football.

A 3-2 Cover 2 can be weak in the middle when blitzing the LB, but sound tackling using the Umbrella technique will limit the damage. Check out Reading Flag Football Defenses for a full breakdown of the weak points of all flag football defenses.

For most teams, eliminating big plays and pressuring the QB with a blitzing LB outweighs the risk of being nickel-and-dimed over the middle. Since youth flag football coaches typically lack the discipline and patience to go on long 6-7 play drives just taking what the defense gives them, your team will still have opportunities to take the ball away and make stops.

A note on blitzing the LB: If all five defenders drop into coverage, the opposing QB has up to 7 seconds to get rid of the ball. That is an eternity for your defenders to cover their receivers. Blitzing puts immediate pressure on the QB to throw with blitzers reaching the QB in 3 seconds or less (12U). Since we want to create chaos in the backfield, our Defensive Coordinator sends the blitz at least 80% of the time.

Alignment & Assignments

Once your players master the alignment and coverage of Deuce, they know about half of what they need to run the entire Umbrella 5v5 Flag Football Defense.

  • Defensive Coordinator
    • Call the defense and indicate blitz or no blitz.
    • For example: “Deuce! (Thumbs up for blitz)”
  • Free Safety (FS)
    • Alignment: Left side of the defense. 10 yards off the ball. 8 yards from the sideline.
    • Stance: Defensive Back Stance & 3 Read Steps
    • Assignment: Deep ½ zone. Covering the left half of the field from 10 yards deep to the back of the end zone.
  • Strong Safety (SS)
    • Alignment: Right side of the defense. 10 yards off the ball. 8 yards from the sideline.
    • Stance: Defensive Back Stance & 3 Read Steps
    • Assignment: Deep ½ zone. Covering the right half of the field from 10 yards deep to the back of the end zone.
  • Cornerbacks (CB)
    • Alignment: Shaded just outside of the widest offensive player. 5 yards off the line of scrimmage.
    • Stance: Defensive Back Stance & 3 Read Steps
    • Assignment: Flat zone from the sideline to 10 yards inside. No deeper than 10 yards.
  • Linebacker (LB)
    • Alignment: 7 yards from the ball. Two yards offset to the QB’s throwing arm side.
    • Stance: Wide Receiver Stance to get a quick jump on the snap. Hand up every play to indicate blitz or fake blitz.
    • Assignment: Coach calls the blitz with a simple thumbs up or down.
      • When blitzing: Get the QB. Force a sack, batted ball, or bad throw.
      • When in coverage: Short middle zone. 10 yards wide. 10 yards deep.

Final Notes

Deuce is a solid overall defense to call in any situation. The Cover 2 shell prevents deep completions while the three underneath defenders make it easy to create pressure with a blitz or to fake the blitz and drop all five players into coverage. Our coaches call Deuce about 50% of the time on defense to contain the offense and limit big plays.

If our opponents begin to catch on to the weakness of Deuce, we can either shift to a basic Cover 1 (Ace) or counter with one of our disguised coverages (Wild Card and Joker).
