Scramble Drill

When the initial play breaks down, your team needs a way to keep it alive. The Air Raid 5v5 Scramble Drill teaches your players how to find open grass even when Plan A fails.

Drill Description:

This drill is actually pretty simple. Your team lines up exactly as they would to practice/run base plays out of the playbook; but instead of taking the first open receiver, the QB holds the ball a set amount of time before delivering the ball to the receiver.

Alignment

  • The offense lines up in the Air Raid 5v5 base formation.
  • A blitzer lines up at 7 yards on defense.
    • Optional: If you have enough players for a defense, place them in the field to defend with Man or Zone coverage.

Assignments

  • Coach #1
    • Pre-snap: Signal the play to the Quarterback.
    • Post-Snap: Eyes downfield to check the QB’s decision making.
  • Coach #2
    • Pre-snap: Set the 7-yard rush line for the blitzer.
    • Post-Snap: Count to 7-seconds out loud. Whistle on a sack by the blitzer or time running out.
  • QB
    • Buy time for 4-seconds.
    • Deliver the ball to an open receiver between 4 and 6 seconds.
      • If there’s not enough defenders to cover the field, Coach #1 calls the color/name of the open receiver. QB throws to that player immediately.
    • Throw it away after 6-seconds.
  • Receivers
    • Run your routes as assigned for 4-seconds.
    • At 4 seconds, break towards open grass based on Scramble Drill rules.
      • Outside receivers (orange/purple) break to open grass in deep zones.
      • Inside receivers (blue/green) break to open grass in shallow zones.

Coaching Points:

Don’t panic when the play falls apart. The Scramble Drill helps your players stay cool when things get chaotic.

  • Develop an Internal Clock
    • Everyone recognizes when a play takes 4-seconds or longer to develop.
    • QB gets comfortable throwing under pressure, delivering the ball late in the 7-second pass clock.
  • Find Open Grass
    • Receivers know what space to occupy when the play breaks down.
    • QB can find the open receiver to something out of nothing.
