Joker: 3-2 Cover 1 Robber Flag Football Defense

Play Description

Joker is what we call our 2-3 Cover 1 Robber flag football defense. It is another clever coverage disguise based on the Robber concept most commonly used in tackle football.

Similar to Wildcard, Joker uses post snap rotation by the Safeties to confuse the opposition and throw off their reads. This time, your team is lining up in a 2-3 Cover 2 look before the snap then rotating into Cover 1 at the snap of the football. The Strong Safety moves into the shallow middle zone while the Free Safety backpedals into the deep middle, covering everything 10 yards or deeper.

This defensive call is most useful against teams that are having success attacking the lightly defended middle zone of Deuce. The pre-snap disguise invites throws over the middle before the SS aggressively moves into the zone to defend or intercept the pass.

A note on blitzing: Joker requires a fast blitz from your LB every time. The SS moving into the shallow zone leaves only the FS covering deep, so the blitz needs to get to the QB before multiple receivers can get downfield.

This is a high risk, high reward defense. The risk is giving up a big play deep. The reward is potentially intercepting a ball over the middle with a chance for a big return.

Alignment & Assignments

Joker is a good play call that gets your athletic Strong Safety into a vulnerable area of the field effectively shutting down short throws and forcing the QB to improvise and make tougher throws.

  • Free Safety (FS)
    • Alignment: Left side of the field. 10 yards off the ball. 8 yards from the sideline.
    • Stance: Defensive Back Stance & 3 Read Steps to the middle of the field.
    • Assignment: Deep zone. Covering the entire field from 10 yards deep to the back of the end zone.
  • Strong Safety (SS)
    • Alignment: Right side of the field. 10 yards off the ball. 8 yards from the sideline.
    • Stance: Defensive Back Stance & No Read Steps
    • Assignment: Short middle zone. Quickly move into the middle of the field covering a 10×10 yard box.
  • Cornerbacks (CB)
    • Alignment: Shaded just outside of the widest offensive player. 5 yards off the line of scrimmage.
    • Stance: Defensive Back Stance & 3 Read Steps
    • Assignment: Flat zone from the sideline to 10 yards inside. No deeper than 10 yards.
  • Linebacker (LB)
    • Alignment: 7 yards from the ball. 2-3 yards outside the QB’s non-throwing arm.
    • Stance: Wide Receiver Stance to get a quick jump on the snap. Hand up to indicate blitz.
    • Assignment: Blitz. Get a sack. Bat the ball down. Force a bad throw.

Final Notes

Joker is a strong defensive playcall against a team without a strong-armed Quarterback, one that likes to run the ball, or one that is happy taking high percentage short throws (like we recommend in the Aid Raid 5v5 Flag Football Playbook).

Our team calls Joker 10-15% of the time. Some games this play makes up a high percentage of our defensive calls while in others we don’t use it at all. The frequency really depends on the quality of your opponent’s coach and quarterback.
