The only 5v5 flag football playbook designed by a Certified Air Raid Coach.
The Air Raid 5v5 flag football playbook was developed out of necessity. After several seasons of running our West Coast Offense inspired playbook, other teams in our flag football league began to catch on to our strategy. Rec teams we could easily defeat were suddenly hanging with us, and competitive teams began to run away from us. Our team of neighborhood kids school friends needed something to give us an advantage.
Since 11v11 tackle teams running the Air Raid are typically underdogs that punch above their weight class, it seemed the obvious choice for our team in a pass-heavy game like 5v5 flag football.
Against opponents with lesser or equal talent, we needed to get ahead quickly and build comfortable leads. When playing tournament level teams, we needed something to keep us in games longer (even against better talent) and give us a chance to win at the end. The traditional Air Raid is designed to simplify the game for coaches and players, stress defenses in multiple ways, and equalize talent disparity. We carried that forward with the 5v5 version of the system, and we have a lot of fun doing it.
The Godfather of the Air Raid, Hal Mumme, sums up the offense perfectly in two quotes:
“The goal is to make it fun for our players. When I die, I want that on my tombstone: ‘Hal Mumme: His players had fun.’”
How do Air Raid coaches make it fun and win at the same time?
“Throw short as many times as possible to people who can score.”
