Would you rather your players get really good at jumping over obstacles and weaving through cones or is it better to let them make catches on the run and avoiding real defenders?
Since there wont be a set of cones in the middle of the field on gameday, the best flag football drills mimic real game situations. The Air Raid 5v5 offense uses just five practice drills to quickly get your players ready for Game #1 and continue developing their skills throughout the season.
Flag football leagues usually have limited practice time, so good coaches have to make sure that their kids are running drills that will show up on gameday. Utilizing a limited number of drills ensures that players can focus on the specific skills the drill is training instead of being distracted by whatever new drill the coach saw online this week.
When your team has mastered these drills, then you can move on to something more complex if you choose to. However, in seven seasons as Head Coach, I have never seen a reason to overcomplicate our practices.
These drills make the most out of the practice time you have available:
- Route Tree Warm Ups – Run crisp routes. Make the throw and catch.
- Contested Catches – Improve focus. Complete passes in traffic.
- Play with Tempo – Play fast. Score quickly. Wear out your opponents.
- Beat Man Coverage – Win off the line. Get open with one move.
- Scramble Drill – Keep the play alive. Succeed when things break down.
The only exception our coaching staff makes to running these drills exclusively comes at the end of a very good practice. If our kids have been focused and productive for 50+ minutes, we will do 5-10 minutes of Ultimate Football or the Gauntlet to add an extra element of fun and competition.
